Captivating Southern Laos - 08 Days Vientiane to Pakse
Arriving in Vientiane, on the Mekong River, you see the sights of the city, and have dinner in a fine restaurant. Then head to Khammouane Province with its breathtaking wilderness beauty, and stay in a hotel on the banks of the Nam Hin Boun River. This river flows into the face of a monolithic mountain, forming the Kong Lor Cave. You journey through this spectacular 7-km long limestone tunnel, and also explore scenic valleys with small traditional villages. Go by boat to Ban Na Pouak, then drive to Tham Pra Pa Cave, with hundreds of ancient bronze Buddha statues and then it’s on to Tha Khek. A long drive takes you to the famous Tad Fan Waterfall Resort for overnight, where you stay in wood bungalows at the top of the falls. Also visit other spectacular falls and then from Pakse, a boat ride takes you the ancient Khmer temple of Wat Phu dating from the 5th century.
Stay on Don Khong Island in the Mekong River, and take a boat trip to see the endangered Irrawady dolphins, and marvel at the four thousand islands region of the river. You return to Pakse where your journey through southern Laos will come to an end.

Itinerary
Day 01: Vientiane Arrival
When you arrive in the capital, Vientiane, you are met by our staff and taken to your luxury hotel in central Vientiane for check-in. This capital city on the Mekong River still retains a somewhat small town feel to it. In the afternoon, we take a sightseeing tour of the city and visit Wat Sisaket with its thousands of miniature Buddha statues; the That Luang Stupa, the country's most important monument; the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha statue; and the imposing Patuxay Monument, the Victory Gate (Arc de Triumph) of
Vientiane. In the evening there will be a welcome dinner at a deluxe restaurant.

Day 02: Vientiane - Hin Boun
Today we head out of Vientiane into the country, and drive to the lush valley of the Nam Hin Boun River in Khammouane Province. This province is famous for its breathtaking wilderness beauty, with huge, rugged limestone cliffs, turquoise rivers, monsoon forests, caves, underground rivers, and traditional villages. Depending on the time of year, in the evening you may be pleasantly serenaded by the singing of the cicadas on the banks of the Nam Hin Boun River.

Day 03: Hin Boun - Kong Lor Cave
After breakfast we go by boat on a trip to Kong Lor Cave. As we cruise along the river you see the towering sheer limestone cliffs, and at every bend in the river there is amazing new scenery. The Nam Hin Boun River flows into a monolithic mountain, and the Kong Lor Cave which is actually a limestone tunnel over 7 km long. This spectacular natural wonder is some 100 meters wide in some places, and takes almost an hour to pass through. The Cave is home to rare birds, and bats that appear in the late afternoon. At the other end of the cave is a scenic valley and we walk to, and explore surrounding villages, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of rural life in Hinboun.

Day 04: Hin Boun - Tha Khek
After breakfast in the hotel, we start out for Tha Khek by taking a private boat from Sala Hin Boun to Ban Na Pouak, stopping at a village along the way. From there we drive to Tham Pra Pa Cave, or Buddha Cave, with 229 bronze Buddha statues, estimated to be more than 600 years old. Then it is on to the town of Tha Khek.

Day 05: Tha Khek - Pakse - Tad Fan Waterfall
Today after breakfast, we take a quick look around the city. Then we are off on a seven-hour drive to Pakse with a stop for lunch along the way. On the way, we also stop to visit an ethnic village. Tonight you stay at the famous Tad Fan Waterfall Resort situated in a beautiful location at the top of these spectacular falls. You stay in wood bungalows designed to harmonize with the surrounding forest.

Day 06: Tad Fan Waterfall - Wat Phu Temple - Don Khong Island
After breakfast we take a walk from the resort to the nearby waterfall of Tad Yeung. This waterfall is very impressive with the twin falls plunging down and flowing into lush jungle. We then drive back to Pakse. From Pakse we take a boat trip to visit the ancient Khmer temple complex of Wat Phu. This World Heritage Site, is estimated to have been active from the 5th century to the late Angkorian period, and is believed to be the origin of the Khmer Empire. Later in the afternoon we take a scenic drive to Don Khong Island.

Day 07: Don Khone Island - Four Thousand Islands - Pakse
After breakfast we drive to Naka Sang, where first we take a private boat trip to see the endangered Irrawady dolphins. We then cruise back to Naka Sang, and after lunch, we drive to Pakse. Along the way, we view some of the four thousand islands as we drive.

Day 08: Pakse Departure
After breakfast in the hotel, there will be free time for leisure activities until it is time for your departure transfer.
