Day 3: Hanoi Countryside by E-bike & Craft Spirits Experience

Escape the bustle of the capital with an e-bike ride through the charming and eclectic outskirts of Hanoi. Depart your hotel at 08:00 and collect your bikes near West Lake. From here, cross one of Hanoi’s famous bridges over the Red River, leaving the busy city behind as quieter roads lead towards the countryside, with Hanoi’s high-rises visible in the distance.

Continue through the rural landscape to Cổ Loa, an ancient citadel steeped in Vietnamese history and legend. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, Cổ Loa served as the capital and political and military center of the Âu Lạc Kingdom under King An Dương Vương. Visit the main An Dương Vương Temple, Ngự Triều Di Quy Communal House, and Princess Mỵ Châu’s village. You’ll also discover a traditional ancient village, including a 280-year-old communal house and the local Phan Clan Ancestral House, which dates back more than 400 years.

Return towards West Lake via the iconic Long Bien Bridge. Completed in 1902, the bridge was once one of the longest in Asia and later became an important wartime supply route during the American War, surviving numerous bombing raids aimed at disrupting this vital crossing over the Red River.

Halfway across the bridge, dismount for a short exploration of Banana Island, a peaceful pocket of farmland tucked within Hanoi’s bustling urban landscape. Named for the many varieties of bananas grown here, the island benefits from fertile alluvial soil and seasonal flooding, which naturally replenishes the land with nutrient-rich silt.

Cycle back from Long Bien through quiet backstreets and along Hanoi’s network of lakes before returning to West Lake. From here, transfer back to your hotel and enjoy some time to rest.

This morning, embark on a scenic journey south for approximately 100 km / 2.5 hours to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of the Dinh and Early Le dynasties. Although much of the ancient citadel has disappeared over the centuries, the remaining ruins blend beautifully into the surrounding limestone landscape, creating a peaceful and atmospheric setting steeped in Vietnamese history.

From Hoa Lu, continue to nearby Tam Coc, known for its dramatic karst formations and tranquil waterways. Often described as “Halong Bay on land,” Tam Coc offers a beautiful introduction to the countryside of Ninh Binh. Board a small private sampan and drift gently along the river, passing rice fields, limestone cliffs, and a series of natural caves.

After the boat trip, check in at Nham Village and join a Bánh Cuốn making class from 14:00 to 15:00.
